The first time you use a candle, it should be allowed to burn long enough for the entire top of the candle to turn liquid (about 1 hour per inch of candle). If the entire top is not melted the first time, the candle will burn down in a well shape, drowning the wick before the wax is burned and reducing the life of the candle
